“I left school at 14 and I had no direction in my life.

My attitude was my biggest problem. I never had the confidence. I wouldn't speak in front of people. I was the guy that sits right at the back. I used to wear the hoodies and the baggie jeans and walk like I was staunch.

At Career NetWork they taught me life skills. I got a hair cut. They gave me real skills and real knowledge about real workplaces. They prepared me for actual experiences. They said to me that, 'this is the way you've got to be'. They outlined the restrictions; they gave me guidelines, and showed me how to be professional in everything I do.

CareerNetWork gave me self-management skills and made me want to keep learning. It's also a great help to be able to step into a job feeling you already know it, both the theory and the practical side of it.

For the future I'd like to get into event management, involving logistics, where I have to think and take on more responsibility. That’s when I decided to go back to CareerNetWork and work out the next step in my career path. Now I'm enrolled to do a Bachelor of Tourism Management at Waiariki. I'd really like to be an event manager in 5 years' time!”

“I left school early and I then had a go at polytech but decided that wasn't my thing either. I had no job and was I drifting with no thought about my future. I wanted to get out of home though and I knew I needed money. That’s when my Mum found out about Career NetWork.

At Career NetWork, they mapped out a career path for me; they supported me, pointed me in the right direction, showed me what was out there and got me an interview with Cummins Engineering. I was stoked to get the job!

Then once I had it I thought well I better show everyone I can do it now. Career NetWork helped me and believed in me. I didn't want to let anyone down. Now I've been with Cummins Engineering for 3 ½ years and completed my Certificate in Autoparts and Accessories Merchandising.

Through Career NetWork I have gained advice, support and guidance, which has led me to a fulfilling career and qualifications. Now I have my own family responsibilities and own my own home.”
